**FOOD INSECURITIES PROJECT**

In 2021, the State of California enacted a law, California State Law Senate Bill (SB) 1383 to effectively reduce green-house gases and improve the environment by keeping food and other compostable materials (aka organic waste) out of landfills. As of January 1, 2024, there is an added requirement; companies producing large amounts of edible food (e.g. City of Hope) must donate excess edible food to food recovery organizations, who will redistribute the food to feed the food insecure.
This addition provided the impetus to explore how Nourishing Hope’s overproduced meals could be re-packaged and delivered to local organizations to reach those in need. Recently, Nourishing Hope and the Community Benefit Departments engaged with Foothill Unity Center, Seeds of Hope, and Project Angel Food to brainstorm the best system for ensuring available meals can be delivered daily to these agencies for redistribution to the food insecure.
The impact on the availability of food and meals to the food insecure population will be measured by collecting data and applying the data to key performance indicators. Once the program is performing to the KPIs, exploration on program expansion will begin. Several means of expanding the program (e.g., partnering with additional medical centers and businesses* that can accelerate or improve the model) have already been discussed.
Donations collected at winemaker dinner and proceeds from wine tastings will benefit this program. Funds will be used to underwrite gasoline for the delivery vehicles and additional soft goods. All other costs (e.g., delivery vehicles, staff to collect and distribute meals, etc.) will be donated by City of Hope through the Nourishing Hope program.

* For example, Too Good To Go is the world's largest marketplace for surplus food. Too Good To Go connects local businesses who have surplus food with consumers who “purchase” that food via the application. Collaboration with Too Good To Go could provide meals to food insecure people through a special code at no cost using a kiosk located at agencies working with the food insecure in San Gabriel Valley.
